Introduction

After Effects is an interesting application to test the CPU since many users seem to be walking in the opposite direction of computer technology. Although Intel and AMD are constantly adding more and more cores to the processor set, After Effects has already moved from being highly efficient in using multiple CPUs in 2014 to ... No. There have been many reasons for this - including the addition of GPU acceleration which has led to a significant increase in performance for many tasks - but the end result is that it has become very easy to spend more money on devices that ended up being slower than the cheaper option .

What is different with the new X Series CPUs is that they break the trend by having the same basic charges as the previous generation. Instead of increasing the base number, these CPUs only contain a bump in frequency plus some other minor architecture updates. At first glance, these processors are not acceptable, but often, these small changes are likely to increase performance in After Effects than if they persisted in "more cores!" a path.



One thing we will notice is that we currently only have access to the i7 9800X, i9 9900X, i9 9920X and i9 9980XE models. Because of this, we will focus on how quickly these new models compare to the previous generation. Once we have the full set, we will publish a more detailed and detailed article on all X-series models as well as other CPUs such as AMD Threadripper.

Standard Analysis

In After Effects, there is a big difference between standard projects and those that use the Projector CPU for 4D Cinema. Since no one has used this feature, we decided to separate test results between "standard" projects and those using the C4D viewer.

Before we reach the same results, we want to clarify the registration system used in our tests. In essence, the "20" means that on average, the system was able to implement our projects at 20% of the specified FPS for the project. The full result would be "100" which means that the system can be restarted in real time, although the difficult projects we use should not actually occur.



Starting with standard projects, the new Intel X-series CPUs were good, but they were not spectacular. The i7 9800X and i9 9900X were much faster than the previous generation, while the i9 and 9920x and i99980XE were about 8% and 6% faster respectively. This is a fairly mild gain, but understandable because projects that do not use the C4D renderer tend to be limited by the CPU's core performance. At Puget Systems, one of our key objectives is to ensure that our customers have access to a fast, reliable workstation, ideally designed for their unique workflow. The main way to do this is by measuring a wide range of devices in After Effects (and many other software packages) that we then publish in our continuing series of hardware articles.

However, while ensuring that we sell the right hardware, it does not give our customers a great idea of ​​how quickly the new workstation will compare with its current system. To address this problem, we're making the internal Ae standard available for public download so anyone can compare their computer to the latest After Effects articles. Best of all, this standard is compatible with both Windows and Mac!

How to run the standard
After you download the standard, unzip it to a convenient location - we recommend placing it on the same drive that stores your active projects where there are a few media assets used throughout the standard. Next, just open the "PugetBenchmark.aep" project file and follow the instructions in Configuring "Benchmark Instructions".



Note that while a number of settings will be automatically set by the base script, there are three settings you will need to manually set where they can not be written effectively. These settings are:

Enable "Allow text writing to write files and access network" in "Edit -> Preferences -> General"
Disable "Disk Cache" in "Edit -> Preferences -> Media & Disk Cache" (having the disk cache enabled in inconsistent results where Ae does not correspond exactly to the time that the files will be written to the cache)
Set Spacebar Preview to "Play Once" in the Preview window
Once the standard is complete, we recommend that you restore these settings back to their original settings, as things like Disk Cache are probably something you want to enable.

After you configure After Effects, you can run the script "PugetBenchmark.jsxbin" by going to "File -> Scripts -> Run Script File" and browse to the standard folder. If you do not see this script, make sure that the Open dialog box is not limited to displaying only ".jsx" files. You will need to confirm one prompt to clear the cache on the disk, and then continue. Most systems must be able to complete the standard within 30-60 minutes, although it may vary based on the performance of your system.

When the standard is completed, you will be given a "total score" as well as individual scores for the different test types. A log file is created in a standard folder that contains these results plus the time in seconds it takes to complete each individual task. Compare your results with those in our After Effects articles dating back to December 2018 and up.

If you're using a Mac using Mojave, you'll need to manually run the "MagnifetoFit.app" and "SendReturn.app" files before you run the standard. Due to the new security features in Mojave, these files will give an error and break the standard if they do not have permission to send commands to system events. If you turn it on manually and click OK, you can enable the "Privacy & security -> Accessibility" permission. Our video available displays the process you can follow.
Compatibility
This standard is designed for After Effects 2019 and must be run on virtually any Windows or Mac OS installed on After Effects CC 2019. However, due to the size of test projects, it is ideal to have 16 GB or more of access memory RAM and GPU with 2 GB + of VRAM.

Note that this standard is still in BETA. Plug-ins and custom preferences in particular may prevent the standard from being turned on correctly. If you experience any problems, we recommend resetting your preferences to the default settings - make sure to back up first!

One of the most common questions you get from people is "How do I update my BIOS?" So to start this article with an unexpected answer, I will say this: You do not do! In the vast majority of cases, there is no reason to update your BIOS. You do not want to do this every time you encounter a problem, because in most circumstances, it will not fix the problem. You definitely do not want to update the BIOS system when nothing happens wrong, because you ask for problems only. Are you likely to cause problems? Is there a risk involved? Yeah. In addition, updating the BIOS will clear all saved CMOS settings, and the updated BIOS will not match any saved profiles. It's part of a process, so it's definitely not something you want to do for a whim. Finally, if you have a system that has any overclocked settings, these settings may not work with an updated BIOS. Changes may make the settings incompatible, and there is no way we can make sure that a certain set of overclocked settings will be trusted with an updated BIOS.

However, there are certainly some situations where a BIOS update is a good idea. If you are having a specific problem with BIOS update patches, look for them. The only problem is that most motherboard manufacturers leave their own update updates mysteriously vague. Instead of mentioning exactly what they specify, they usually have something like "CPU compatibility upgrades" or "stability fixes." This is frustrating, because it hides changes made in the BIOS update. The only way to find out if someone will fix your problems will be to ask someone to know. This is where we get to. The general rule is, if you've got one of our motherboards, and you're having a problem fixed by the BIOS update, we'll have heard of it. There are not many of these types of problems, so if you are unsure, contact us and ask us.

So far after we've covered it, you've reached us, we recommended updating the BIOS. what should I do? First, we need the right tools. You will need a thumb drive. It's better to be blank, but as long as you do not have a set of files, you should be fine. Connect it to a USB port on the back of the computer. You will also need to get the BIOS screen shots at hand. 

After you sign in, you'll need to click your order in "My Quotes" (ask your delegate if you're not sure) and click the "Photos" button at the top.


Scroll down a bit and you'll see a list of BIOS screen shots, plus a link to download them all as a zip file. You do not need them now, but you'll need to save them to another phone / computer or print them so they're handy at a later time.

After that, you'll want to get the latest version of the BIOS. Usually you get it from motherboard manufacturer. If you have a Puget computer, the support delegate will give you a link to the latest version of the BIOS. Download it. It will be a compressed file. Find it in the Downloads folder, then right-click and extract it. The extracted file will end with the file type ".CAP". You will need to copy this file to the drive that you connected.

(Bit of the warning here, if you use the motherboard "X79" or "Rampage IV", you may need to go to another different way because of the ROM format to convert the CAP format. "X79" or "Rampage IV" in the motherboard name.)

Here comes the fun part.

Restart your computer and click delete to access the BIOS. You want to right-click when you hear a POST message indicating that the system has started normally. You should get a screen similar to the one below.

Next, you'll go to the Tools menu. You'll see something similar to the image under this. One option will be the Asus EZ Flash Utility. Select it and hit Enter!

Finally, we will get something like that. This will insert a set of drives on the left and files on the right. These parts are a bit tricky. You'll need to use the arrow keys and tab to select each drive until you find one in the .CAP file. Select this drive, then go to the .CAP file and press Enter. You will be prompted to confirm that you have received the correct file. Say it then wait! The update will continue on its own, and eventually the system will restart.

Once the system restarts, you will need to go back to the BIOS again to restore the settings. Remember those photos we saved earlier? You'll want to go back to it. Restart, and click Delete to access the BIOS. The BIOS can show a preview that says "Press F1 to enter setup". If so, just click on it.

You're likely to restore your new iPhone from a backup of your current iPhone. If so, you only need to do two things:

Make sure that you have a recent backup.
Use Apple's new automatic setup feature to get started.
Number 1 is as simple as going to the iCloud settings on your iPhone and checking for a fresh automatic backup. If not, do one manually. Go to Settings> Your Name> iCloud> iCloud Backup and tap Back Up Now. Wait until it ends.

Set the Do Not Disturb setting in the Settings app (located in the second section at the bottom of the page, under Notifications and Control Center). You can switch to On and set the times when you want to keep notifications off your face. Try 10 pm to 7 am if you can. PRO Tip: Allow some things if there is an emergency: Enable Allow connections from Favorites, and change the recurring calls to On. IOS 12 also lets you turn on the "Do Not Disturb" feature in Bedtime, which ignores all alerts, and even hides them from the lock screen so you do not get harassed when picking up your phone to check the time.
